Powertrain and Connectivity on the Volkswagen BUDD-e Concept

Volkswagen BUDD-e Concept Release Date

While electric technology is improving all the time (like with the new 2017 Chevy Bolt EV), every once in a while there is a breakthrough that blows our minds. The Volkswagen BUDD-e all-electric made its United States Auto Show debut last week at the New York International Auto Show and we are extremely excited about the futuristic possibilities inherent in this revolutionary microbus concept.

Efficiency and Power with the Modular Electric Platform

Created for plug-in vehicles, the Modular Electric Platform (MEB) from Volkswagen combines efficient use of space with top efficiency. The new BUDD-e concept is the first vehicle designed exclusively with MEB in mind. It is powered by a 101 kWh battery back that is flat and seamlessly integrated into the van’s floor. This powerful battery runs two electric motors that handle each axle. The BUDD-e van is capable of up to 233 miles of pure electric power based on EPA drive cycle testing. Real life driving distance may be even greater, as international testing methods say this EV should be able to reach 373 miles just running on battery power.

Starting with the BUDD-e concept, Volkswagen is anticipating that electric charging times will be reduced by up to 30 minutes by 2019, making plug-in vehicles efficient and even more user friendly.

Connectivity Technology on the BUDD-e concept van

As if the sheer efficiency of the electric-powered BUDD-e concept that has been released isn’t enough, this concept also features the latest in the connectivity technology of the future. It will be equipped with the ability to communicate to all the electronics in your life, whether that is just your phone, or your house is also connected to the world wide web. Smart homes, smart cars, and smart people will be able to work together for a future with even better connectivity and seamless, hassle-free communication.

The Volkswagen BUDD-e concept also features the intuitive touch and gesture control that we first wrote about in our Volkwagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept blog post. Using this technology, BUDD-e drivers should be able to use gesture and touchscreen functions to control various functions of their vehicles. Voice controls will also be enabled.

We can’t wait to learn more about the Volkswagen BUDD-e concept.
